travel guide

Travel

Do you love to travel? You might be surprised to learn that not everyone does. Some people enter certain occupations to fulfill a desire to travel, but after years of the same routine, suddenly they decide that they'd prefer to stay home.

What about truck drivers? Most of them choose trucking because of the freedom they feel when not confined to a desk or an office. But what happens after fifteen or twenty years on the job. Suddenly many of them can't stand being away from their homes and families anymore, and they wish they had begun working in a different profession. The same thing can happen to people in the airlines industry, or any other profession that requires the employees to be gone for several days at a time, several times a year.

Not long ago a computer programmer stated that he applied for and obtained a promotion to system's analyst. He looked forward to the new job because it allowed him to travel out of state four to eight times a year. He could not do that as a programmer. What happened? After a couple of years, he decided that he hated it, and took a voluntary demotion back to a simple programmer so that he no longer had to travel out of town.

Still, the aversion to travel does not slam everyone. For some, no matter how often they go out of town, it isn't often enough. One noteworthy thing is that some people love to max out the business expense account when it involves work-related travel, are extremely conservative when it comes to spending their own bucks while on vacation. Suddenly the motels drop from four star to three, and meals change from steak dinners to bean burritos. People who insist on first class plane tickets for work-related travel often decide that coach is great when they have to charge it to their credit cards for personal travel.

Nevertheless, booking all your own reservations can be a hassle. When you try to find the lowest prices on plane tickets, rental cars, motels, dining establishments and entertainment, you often wonder if you really got the best prices available. By the time you make 20 or 30 telephone calls to check on pricing, you are already frazzled.

The easiest way to make reservations might be to phone a travel agent. Sometimes such agents can get you about as good a deal as you can find yourself, and you don't have the dogfights about travel plans with your loved ones. A single telephone call to a travel agent can get you your entertainment, plane tickets, rental car, motel and travel itinerary without any additional provocation.

If you don't wish to use a travel agent, you can still get all of your needs taken care of with a single phone call or online signup. Airlines, motels and online discount travel businesses can often take care of most of the details for you nearly as well as a travel agent. At least they can find the same travel tickets, rental cars, entertainment and much more.

You can, however, still book everything yourself if you prefer. One of the ways to get the best motel deals is to wait until you get into town to call a motel. As long as there are no conventions or other big events that might book the motel up, you may be able to get a large discount on the price of the motel room. The reason being that if a motel isn't filled to capacity, the management would rather rent a room out to you at a discount than to have the room stand vacant all night. If you plan to attempt such a transaction, check online before you travel. You'll want to see if there are any conventions, circuses or other large events that would prevent you from finding any vacant room at all when you arrive at your destination.
